“Managers need to understand human behavior in order to manage in order to improve work efficiency,” says Ms.Nishi Aggarwal, Assistant Professor,Department of Management Studies,JIMS,Vasant Kunj-II.

Human behavior has an impact on the behavior of group, which, on the other hand, has a major impact on the organization. Organizational behavior focuses on three levels of analysis:  individual, group and organization. Individual behavior in terms of personality, perception, attitude, values, learning skills, motivation towards job, job satisfaction, level of stress, social, cultural;some other factors also have an impact on organizational behavior. An individual’s behavior also has an impact on the group behavior, which ultimately has an effect on the organization’s work environment.

Organization models may define the nature of human behavior and idea about the work done by individuals in an organization. These models define the motivation level, innovation and enthusiasm of employee for the productivity of organization. The autocratic model is based on the traditional thinking of employee where  all of them are satisfied and no one wants to do work for betterment or for growth of organization. No factor can motivate such employees -they are like theory X lazy types. Sometimes management takes action  and these employees are given some responsibilities. In this theory there is little interaction between management and employees which creates problems because only management has the right to think and they only issue  commands to their employee-functioning, in the process as robots.

The next model is custodial where management believes in use of resources and pays money to their employees for their performance. This is a kind of maintenance factor, which provides  security but fails to increase the motivation level of employees. Management never gives any kind of authority to their employees for making decisions but whenever required on the job that decision making power is passed on to them.

The next model is supportive model, which is good for organization. It provides better communication, leadership, decision-making, control, and influence to their employees, and makes the working environment feasible. This model provides support to the employees and makes their achievements go in the upward direction. JIMS makes the environment convenient for their employees ; makes it supportive in terms of getting higher results. The environment of JIMS encourages  better communication between management and employees for enhancing understanding in order to get better productivity.

The last model is collegial which an extension version of supportive model. It means the group of people have a common purpose and employees have a  high degree of understanding with each other. Every employee has his own responsibility and has less requirement of direction and control from management because everybody knows his or her responsibility very well. They have the authority to make decisions whenever required in any situation and can manage the condition in a better way. Organization follows the level of hierarchy and understands the authority of making decisions.

Today’s organization structure is very complex and difficult to manage;the  managers need to understand the behaviour of a group of people which has an impact on the performance of organization. Therefore, the ultimate objective is to understand the employee and motivate them towards the work for improving work efficiency and make organization structure smooth and successful.
