Leisure can be described as the absence of work. However, when we do something like helping a youth organization or raising funds for our favorite charity, we may spend our leisure time in a way similar to someone else’s working day!

Leisure is the freedom to do what we want to do, rather than doing something which we must do. We have the opportunity of using spare time in a way that appeals to us. Free time is time left over from working, or because we are on holiday, or have retired from work.

Recreation may be defined as amusement, entertainment, playing sports, finding something to do which suits the person. The leisure and recreation business is developing rapidly as people make an effort to keep fit by taking part in  sports activities. This gives a person the opportunity to meet the others & there is enjoyment in doing this.

New leisure complexes have been built which contain swimming pools, with water chutes and a tropical atmosphere,  multi-gym, solarium, squash courts and working – out with weights. The weather may not matter to the people taking part in the traditional sporting activities of swimming, sailing, riding, and walking.

Art and Entertainment

Theatres and concert halls are usually situated in the centers of towns and some large arenas (like the Nynex Arena in Manchester) are used for concerts, ice-skating displays, rock bands, pop groups and other entertainments.

Outdoor Activities

Many outdoor activities are offered in the local parks. You may find that your local park offers:

  • Bowling
  • Riding
  • Golf
  • Tennis courts
  • Football pitches
  • Walks or nature trails
  • Children’s playground.

These are all run by your local authority.

National Sports Centers may offer formal training courses for outdoor activities. Your tourist information Centre will have information about  walking, fishing and sailing as outdoor activities.

Outdoor pursuit centers offer canoeing, hiking and mountain climbing. You may also have a country park in your area or a local Centre for water sports.

The natural resources of an area such as beautiful scenery, lakes, countryside, mountains or hills lend themselves to certain outdoor activities.
