Ms. Meenakshi Chopra  , Assistant Professor, Department of Management Studies, JIMS VK-II examines the role of  “Ethics and Self Discipline in life.”

Self discipline and Ethical behavior, needless to say, are very important aspects of one’s personality that makes a difference.

The actions, thoughts and the repercussions of what we think of getting result not only influence ourselves but may also affect the one who stays/works around us. All we need to develop is the ethical self-discipline so as to refrain from acting destructively and to engage in positive practices and doings.

Self-discipline refers to the ability of oneself to control the impulse, to be more concentrated, and to see work/tasks/assignments/projects up to accomplishment. It is defined by the person’s determination and willpower in putting their sincere efforts and attention to a particulars task until  it is adequately completed. People who are high on self-discipline do not get distracted easily, no matter what is going around them. Their concentration level is quite high as compared to others working with or around them.

‘Ethics’.  When we come across the  word  different meanings start coming to our mind. These are general set of rules which are relevant to be followed and  to be the  part of society. Ethics represent guidelines to be followed to live in the righteous way in society.  These are few sets of guidelines which are commonly acceptable worldwide. In general whenever we talk about a person’s behavior, one of the most important things is ethics. What I strongly believe on this is that a person should live with some set of principles, which make him/her acceptable in the society/workplace or anywhere he goes. To be more specific ethics in the workplace are the  moral code that governs  the behavior of employees with regard to right and wrong in respect of  conduct and decision making in working environment.

The most relevant and required ethical principles at work place  may include: values which include devotion, respect, hard work and love for the work ; integrity i.e being honest and sincere under any situation; character –again the  most important ethics which describes a person in short; lawful conduct- i.e rules and regulation fixed by  oneself to  differentiate between right and wrong; dedication -the stronger the dedication is , the greater the output/ results will be ; responsibility & accountability- trait to take ownership of and for things done ; respect-for one’ work  and fairness-in own’s actions.

Everyone  has  the power to change the world. Ethical behavior at the workplace helps us  to stay healthy not only physically but it also gives us  the  peace of mind. The most beautiful experience of life is when we don’t have any regrets for anything and we get appreciation  for who we are. It gives one’s mind so much contentment and peace that even in challenging situations when others can’t think of any solution, we are the one who can think calmly and finally can reach up to the solution . This is the strength of the steady inner mind of an individual which helps oneself in attaining self and organizational goals.

Peter F. Drucker stated in his words , “it is not enough to do things right; we must also do the right things” which is true to a great extent as  it not only  leads to the way towards the betterment of work life  but it also sets up a systematic path which will  finally take us to a final destination.
