Topic: Is overdependence of youth on social media making it lose its critical thinking abilities? Long gone are the days when people spent long hours poring over books, newspapers and magazines gathering information for a written or an oral discourse. The opinions on matters of importance, however, remained their own as the books or newspapers played a miniscule role in influencing them. The age of technology has brought about a tectonic shift in both the way of working and thinking of the people. All that it takes today to garner support for a cause or a movement is an influential post on a social media site by a smart thinking mind and one finds ,within a few hours , thousands of followers expressing solidarity with the initiator. So powerful and pervasive has become the influence of this medium that its use ,especially , by the youth has become a subject of discussion almost all over the world. Whether the youth’s dependence on this medium is making it lose its critical thinking abilities or not was the topic of the annual inter campus debate on the 4th of Feb’2019 this year. The event saw participation from four campuses of JIMS, namely Lajpat Nagar, VasantKunj, Kalkaji and Greater Noida. As is the practice, the competition was held on two levels; while the undergraduate groups debated with the U.G groups; the PGDM of Kalkaji debated with the B.Ed group of Greater Noida. Putting forth their arguments firmly and persuasively, the participants gave a fine proof of their awareness, intelligence and oratorialskills.Covering every topic beginning with becoming asocial, developing suicidal tendencies, body shaming to getting carried away by strong opinions of manipulative minds, the students discussed the pro and the contra with effortless ease. The question-answer round at the end of each session was indeed a compelling testimony to the presence of mind indispensable in a competition like this. After a long and logical battle of wits, it was time for the judges to give their verdict-in the Undergraduate category the first position for speaking in favor of the motion went to PrakharSrivastav of Lajpat Nagar campus and the same position for speaking against the motion went to Vibhuti Seth of Greater Noida; the second prize was bagged by Jaanvi from VasantKunj for speaking in favor of the subject and Ananya for speaking against it. In the post graduate group , the 1st position for both and against the motion went to the duo from Kalkaji –Rhythm –For the motion and Simardeep-Against the motion.

User friendly apps changing the way we live. The six participating teams were asked to choose one from the two shortlisted topics. One could witness the high conviction levels of the participants in the passion with which they presented their views on their respective topics. The aptness of expression was complemented by skillful preparation of the slides. Graphical representation of facts and figures; relevant videos further added to the effectiveness of the speech. The competition was held on two levels: UG and PG.The first prize in the UG category went to Aayush Yadav and Viraz of Lajpat Nagar Campus and the second to Simran and Syed Mohd of Greater Noida. In the PG category the first prize winners were Lakshay Sethi and Shubji Jain. The event concluded with Prof (Maj.Gen.) M.P. Singh giving away the prizes to the winners.
The Inter Campus Debate Competition this year was an opportunity for the participants to voice their views on the widely discussed and publicized issue of gender equality. Talking about the glass ceiling that exists for women in various spheres of life, the participants speaking against the motion argued that if the need of the hour was a balanced society, then it was important for us to go far beyond the social and economic empowerment . They strongly felt that if a woman truly had the merit and intellect to perform , then , along with her male counterparts , she must be given a fair chance to prove herself worthy of the position in question. Those arguing in favour of the motion felt that women like Indra Nooyi, Chanda Kochhar, Naina Lal Kidwai and many others like them had already excelled themselves in their respective fields as the economic and social empowerment awarded to them enabled them to do so and that there was no further need for any other kind of empowerment; Any woman with the will to make a career, they felt, could do so with the resources already given to her.Arguing fervently in favor of the stands picked up by them , the participants truly took the competition to a different level. The competition concluded with Vibhuti (for the mostion)of Vasant Kunj Campus and Aayush (against the motion)of Lajpat Nagar campus both bagging the first prize. The second prize went to Dhriti (For the motion) of Vasant Kunj Campus and Tarak (Against the motion) of Greater Noida Campus. For putting forth his case with zeal and eloquence , a prize for outstanding performance was given to Dhruv of Lajpat Nagar campus. In the Post Graduate category both the first and the second prize were won by Kalkaji campus participants –Nidhi and Ritika respectively.
